Podcast on How to Find a Remote Job
These 6 Remote Work Podcasts Will Help Workers Thrive
COVID-19 is turning office workers around the world into work-from-home (WFH) employees overnight.
Global Workplace Analytics estimates that the global pandemic may result in a "significant upswing" in the adoption of work-from-home arrangements, predicting that "the longer people are required to work from home, the greater the adoption we will see when the dust settles," which they predict could result in up to 30% of the workforce working at home at least once a week within the next two years.
Whether you're new to remote work or have been doing it for a while, there's a lot to be learned about doing it better, particularly under the current circumstances—everything from how to maximize its effectiveness, to how to feel better doing it, to communicating efficiently with the teammates whom you're not in the same room with.
To help navigate the (new to many) work of remote work, we drew up a list of some helpful podcasts that are targeted at people who work from home. While some of these are "officially" considered remote work podcasts and others are general business podcasts, each in the list below offers something valuable to the WFH discussion.
The podcasts options below are specifically intended for a remote work audience.
Remote Work Podcasts
Remote Work Podcast with Job van der Voort
Billed as "Everything about working remotely, be that from home, or as a digital nomad," this podcast has eight episodes that cover the gamut of remote-work topics, from Measuring Productivity to examining the Challenges with Remote Work. The podcasts were created in 2018 and 2019 by host Job van der Voort and are generally between 25 and 45 minutes long.
Reimagine Work Podcast with Paul Millerd
With new episodes dropping every Wednesday, this podcast, which has been running since 2017, is described on Apple Podcasts as "one of the top future of work podcasts." Episodes vary in length from around 30 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes.
No stone is left unturned, as Millerd "explores our modern relationship with work and features conversations with philosophers, freelancers, self-employed entrepreneurs, thinkers and generous humans who share their perspective on the anxiety of the modern work experience, personal reinvention, creativity, sabbaticals, leisure, self-employment, unconventional living, digital nomadism, and corporate culture."
Of particular interest to new remote workers sent home because of the COVID-19 pandemic is the March 18, 2020, episode with Laurel Farrer, founder of Distribute Consulting and the Remote Work Association, on The Global WFH Experiment and Long-Term Promise of Remote Work. The New Corner Office with Laura Vanderkam
Author and speaker Laura Vanderkam—who also hosts a time management podcast called Before Breakfast that features quick hits (generally four to eight minutes) of advice on making the most of your time—just launched "The New Corner Office."
Her new podcast was designed to address the fact that many people are working from home for the first time in the new era of social distancing, and to provide guidance around this new reality.
As with "Before Breakfast," the episodes in "The New Corner Office" are short and sweet (four to five minutes) on topics like Use Screen Time Strategically to ensure quiet work time when you need it, and Open Meetings with Social Time to put relationships on the agenda.
Remotely Effective with Thomas Lattimore
Host Thomas Lattimore started his podcast in July 2019 "to provide practical advice for those that work from home, in a distributed team, or lead an organization that has remote employees." The six available episodes range from 15 minutes to nearly an hour.
While some of the podcast's earlier topics included more general advice such as Staying Connected: the Human Side of Team and Best Practices for Chat Collaboration, the March 17 episode on A Crash Course in Working From Home with Mark Shropshire is particularly timely. It also includes links to helpful online resources such as a "Remote Work Survival Kit" and information on "How Working Parents Can Prepare for Coronavirus Closures."
Podcasts That Talk About Remote Work (Among Other Things)
Marketplace with Kai Ryssdal
This well-known business news program from American Public Media provides 27-minute episodes that offer "context on the economic news of the day." While topics run the gamut far beyond the world of remote work, a few podcasts of particular interest to remote workers currently are these:
More Americans Are Working From Home, which specifically addresses the shift to remote work due to COVID-19, and Remote Offices Find Creative Workarounds as More Americans Stay Home, in which FlexJobs founder Sara Sutton joins the dialogue on the future of work.
#AmWriting with Jessica Lahey, KJ Dell'Antonia, and Sarina Brown
In this podcast, three successful professional writers share their tips and actionable advice on how writers and journalists can be more creative and productive.
Their shows are generally 40 to 45 minutes long, and since each of the three hosts works from a home office, the trio has plenty of relevant advice for those who work from home, whether or not you're a writer.
Their March 19, 2020, episode on #HowtoWorkAnyway specifically addresses the challenges that writers and other creatives are currently facing in trying to get their jobs done working remotely while dealing with the global anxiety created by the coronavirus.
